Operators and consultants

The Center has eight specialist dentists in various fields (including two orthodontics experts), two hygienists, two chair assistants, a nursing coordinator and secretarial staff. It also makes use of the consultancy of the Radiology Service, of the Department of Anesthesia, Resuscitation and Analgesic Therapy and of the Laboratory of the Sacro Cuore-Don Calabria Hospital of Negrar, as well as of dental technicians to provide the necessary prosthetic processing.

An operating room and attention to prevention

The department occupies an area of 600 square meters of the Don Calabria multipurpose center and has 13 units (dental chairs), including a surgical clinic with all the features of an operating room for dental interventions of a certain relevance. A large space is instead reserved for five pediatric orthodontics positions, which underlines the Center’s strong focus on prevention, especially for children. The presence of only five workstations in a single environment allows the youngest to share the moment of therapy with their peers, supporting each other, so to speak.

Radiological center with low-dose CT scans

The Odontostomatological Center is also recognized as a diagnostic imaging center. It has a teleradiography, an orthopantography and a volumetric CT-beam cone-beam which emits a radiation dose twenty times lower than the traditional CTs. The diagnostic imaging reports are sent in real time to the Radiology Service of the Sacro Cuore Hospital in Negrar for reporting.

Prosthetics in a few hours

The prosthetic area has the Cad Cam system, which allows the creation of crowns and bridges in a few hours. In selected cases it is possible to detect the impression of the dental arches using a camera connected to a computer (Cerec), without using the traditional impression material. Cerec virtually makes the prosthetic tooth and sends the information to another machine where a ceramic block has been inserted. The crown is created in a few minutes, ready to be cemented in a short time on the patient. Traditionally this procedure is the work of the dental technician, with results sometimes not always standardized. The aid of the computer, to which the doctor is a console, guarantees precision and a controlled and constant quality standard. In one session the patient is returned “his” smile with a considerable saving of time. The Center has in particular thought of the missionaries of the Opera Don Calabria, who have a short period of stay in Italy before returning to the mission.

Same-day dental implants without incision

Thanks to the integration of surgery, imaging and Cad Cam, the Via San Marco Center is able to perform dental implants in a few hours, even for entire arches. The overlap of the image provided by the Cad-Cam system and the TAC gives the surgeon the exact coordinates for the insertion in the gum of the implant screws above which the new teeth will then be placed. The intervention, however, occurs first virtually, via the computer. The file is sent to an international company for the creation of a surgical mask, which reproduces exactly the patient’s dental arch. Instead of teeth, the transparent imprint has holes through which the implant screws will be inserted without needing to cut with a scalpel. Once inserted, the previously made ceramic teeth will be fixed to them. All

this with considerable advantages: the margin of error is of the order of microns, without therefore the risk of injury of nerves or blood vessels. Furthermore, by not practicing any incision, a lower dose of anesthesia is administered, the patient feels less pain after the operation and, compared to the traditional implant procedure, he can return to a social life quickly. The Center has already treated people who are completely toothless, who within a few hours have returned home with fixed prostheses.

An internal sterilization center

As a further guarantee of safety for the patient, the Center has its own sterilization center with the dirty area separated from the clean area, but joined by a communicating autoclave.
