Operators and consultancy services

The Centre boasts eight dentists who are specialists in various branches (including orthodontics experts), two hygienists, two chairside assistants, a nursing coordinator and some secretary workers. It also avails itself of consultancy by the Radiology Service, the Anaesthesia, resuscitation and pain therapy Department, and the Laboratory of Sacro Cuore -Don Calabria di Negrar Hospital, as well as dental technicians (prosthodontists), in order to provide the necessary prosthetic works.

A theatre and focus on prevention

The department occupies an area of 600 square meters within Don Calabria’s Multipurpose Centre, and avails itself of 13 facilities of national relevance and high specialization (dental chairs), including a surgery clinic having all the characteristics of a theatre reserved for dental procedures of a certain relevance. A wide space is reserved instead for five paediatric orthodontics posts, which thing underlines the Centre’s strong focus on prevention, especially as regards children. The presence of a single environment of five posts allows the young inmates to share with their peers even the moment of the treatment, thereby being able to give each other support, so to speak. Thought has also been given, nevertheless, to a single-post orthodontics clinic, totally “latex free” for all those who show allergy to latex.

Radiology centre with CAT (Computed Axial Tomography) at low readiation dose

The Odontostomatological Centre is also acknowledged as a diagnostic Centre by images. It is equipped with teleradiography, orthopantomagraphy and a cone-beam volumetric tomography (CBVT) with a radiation dose twenty times lower than traditional CT scans. The reports of diagnostics by images are sent in real time to the Radiology Service of Sacro Cuore di Negrar Hospital for medical recording.

A prosthesis in a few hours

The prosthetic area is equipped with the Cad Cam system, which enables the realization of crowns and bridges in a few hours. In selected cases, it is possible to detect the imprint left by the dental arches through a video camera linked to a computer (Cerec), without therefore utilizing the traditional material for imprints. Cerec virtually realizes the prosthetic tooth and sends the information to another machine where a ceramic cube has been inserted. The creation of the crown occurs in just a few minutes, ready to be then cemented on the patient within a short time. Traditionally, this procedure is the prerogative of the dental technician, with results which are at times not always standardized. Help from the computer, at the console of which a doctor sits, ensures precision and a controlled and constant quality standard. Within a single session, the patient is given back “his” smile together with a substantial time saving. The Centre has especially thought of missionaries attached to the Don Calabria Charity, who are granted a short stay in Italy before going back to their mission.

Dental implants on the same day and without any incision

Thanks to the integration of surgery, image-based diagnostics and Cad Cam, the Centre in via San Marco is capable of carrying out dental implants, including those for whole arches, in a few hours. The superimposition of the image provided by the Cad-Cam system and by the CT scan gifts the surgeon the exact coordinates for inserting in the gums the implant screws, onto which the new teeth will later be fixed. The operation, however, first occurs virtually, via the computer. The file is sent to an international company so as to create a surgical mask, which precisely reproduces the patient’s dental arch. In lieu of the teeth, the transparent imprint displays some holes through which the implant screws are subsequently inserted without any incision with the scalpel. Once inserted, the ceramic teeth previously realized are then fastened onto them. All of that is accompanied by substantial advantages: the margin of error is calculated in microns, hence without the risk of injuries to nerves or blood vessels. Besides, as no incision is done, a lower does of anesthesia is administered, the patient feels less pain after the operation, and, compared to the traditional implant procedure, he can go back to his social life more quickly. The Centre has already treated totally gap-toothed persons, who, within a few hours’ period, returned home with fixed prostheses.

A main internal sterilization office

As further guarantee of patient safety, the Centre is equipped with its own main sterilization office where dirty water is separated from clean water, yet it is united by a communicating autoclave.
