The section of neonatal pathology is part of the Department of Pediatrics, is located on the 4th floor of the Sacro Cuore Hospital, entrance F.

Our section of Neonatal Pathology welcomes premature babies from the 32nd week and pathological full-term babies who require multi-purpose monitoring and intermediate care but who do not need long-term intensive treatment.

It has 5 thermocouples, 2 neonatal islands and 2 thermal beds.

Neonatal Pathology has as its institutional purpose the diagnosis, treatment and assistance in intensive / sub-intensive therapy of all neonatal (non-surgical) diseases. Our structure can count, on site, on a broad spectrum of sub-specialties that allow high-level diagnostics and therapy: neonatal echocardiography with advice from pediatric cardiologists, brain ultrasound with advice from the child neuropsychiatrist and thanks to the collaboration with ophthalmology it is possible to diagnose and treat severe retinopathy of prematurity; and with the possibility of performing in the patient’s bed XR chest-abdomen, brain ultrasound, ECG, EEG, ecocardium.

The performance of the neonatal pathology section is varied and divided into several activities.

Highly specialized assistance and care during the newborn’s stay in neonatal pathology, paying particular attention to the “humanization” issues aimed at favoring the various phases of the relationship between the newborn and his family.

We promote the use of breast milk as a food for all newborns.

Moreover, the certification of “Amico del Bambino” (BFH Baby Friendly Hospital) is underway according to the UNICEF / OMS guidelines.

The staff undertakes to use alternative methods, according to UNICEF instructions, for the administration of milk, compatibly with the problems presented by the Newborn, if it cannot be attached to the breast.

We also pay particular attention and support to mothers who for health reasons or by choice should / want to give up breastfeeding.

We encourage preterm babies Marsupioterapia with mom or dad, a therapy that involves placing the newborn skin-to-skin contact with the parent in order to facilitate contact between the two and the promotion of breastfeeding.

We guarantee the utmost attention to the problems of clinical risk, especially with regards to the administration of drugs, the efficiency of the equipment and the efficiency of the aids used for treatment.

We guarantee the transport of the pathological infant who needs intensive therapy through the regional service of “Transport of Critical Infant”.

We promote integration with territorial structures to offer integrated specialist services (for example sheltered shelter) and the Regional Project “Genitori Più”, a program for early prevention, monitoring of health behaviors and prevention actions in the first years of life.
