BARIATRIC SURGERY ACTIVITY

INDICATION OF OPERATION

The operation is indicated for people whose body mass index (BMI, height to weight ratio) is more than 40, but also for people with BMI over 35 with other diseases.

VERIFICATION OF ELIGIBILTY TO OPERATION

The patient undergoes an examination with surgeon and gastroenterologist and interview with psychologist and dietician to verify eligibility to operation. The patient is assessed medically (even with instrumental diagnostic tests) and also psychologically. Understanding the role food plays in life is a determining factor for operation benefits duration over time. In this regard the Sacro Cuore Don Calabria’s Bariatric Surgery collaborates with the Nutritional Rehabilitation Unit of Casa di Cura Villa Garda (Verona, Italy) where the patient may carry out a three-weeks psychological and food education treatment.

PRE-ADMISSION

Collected all medical and psychological data, and verified the eligibility to operation, the dates of operation and pre-admission are fixed.

THE OPERATION

A gastrectomy sleeve is performed in laparoscopy. It consists in removal of large part of stomach, taking form of tube connected to duodenum. The gastrectomy sleeve makes greater sense of satiety, not just for reduction of food containment space, but also because is removed that part of stomach dedicated to production of hormone fostering appetite.

FOLLOW UP

The patient is discharged with a specific diet to follow. Follow-up examinations are planned after 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year from the operation. After 12 months, the examination is annual. The patient is undertaken after operation by the same staff which followed him/her before operation.
