REHABILITATION PROCEDURE

The rehabilitation reality within the Opera Don Calabria of Verona has been always characterized by the evolution of rehabilitation proposals created mostly upon request of needs expressed by people in difficulty. Since the 1970s the two facilities of Opera Don Calabria (the Negrar Hospital and the former Verona’s Professional Center) began to turn their attention to physical and cognitive-behavioural disability.

Since then, following the needs change, but also adopting the requests of National Social and Health System, our organization has become increasingly complex.

Since the 1980s we tried to, in line with national documents that succeed each other, provide a rehabilitation pathway as complete as possible by diversifying both services and treatment places in a pathway that took into account the different needs of patients and most appropriate use of resources.

For this, in the Rehabilitation Department there are all the “levels of rehabilitation intensity” provided for by the national and regional legislation. This allows us to strenghten the rehabilitation pathways for specific disabilities by adding specific programmes for professional and social reintegration.

ABOUT US

The Rehabilitation Department includes:

  • Intensive Neurological Rehabilitation Unit – Severe Brain-damaged Unit/ Spinal Unit:

Director: Dr Giuseppe Armani

Second floor of Don Calabria’s building

It hosts mostly patients with severe diseases and at risk of clinical instability, needing medical observation, nursing care and multiple and complex rehabilitation treatment. It’s about persons with lesions of spinal cord or outcomes of severe head trauma or other severe brain lesions (vascular, anoxic, etc.).

  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit – Rehabilitation Long-Term Care:

Director: Dr Zeno Cordioli

Third floor of Don Calabria’s building

It represents a rehabilitation “second level”, for patients with important rehabilitation needs, but of low gravity than the previous unit, featuring outcomes of cerebral vascular lesions (“ictus”), outcomes of recent orthopaedic surgeries (hip prosthesis, knee prosthesis, etc.) or other disabling problems not nursable at outpatient level.

  • Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Unit:

Director: Dr Silvia Marani

Third floor of Casa Nogarè

It hosts patients with outcomes of recent orthopaedic surgeries (hip and knee prosthesis, femur fractures, etc.)

  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (SMFR):

Director: Dr Elena Rossato

First floor Don Calabria Hospital

The Unit is responsible for providing all the Hospital’s rehabilitation services, provides consultation and services to inpatients in wards of Intensive Rehabilitation – Severe Brain-Damaged Unit/Spinal Unit, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Long-term care, Healthcare Residence/ Special Permanent Reception, Orthopaedics and other wards, as well as external users. It is equipped with various gyms located at Sacro Cuore Hospital, Don Calabria Hospital and Casa Nogarè building.

  • Healthcare Residence/Special Permanent Reception (RSA-SUAP):

Head: Dr Brunello Milano

Casa Nogarè

It deals with people in prolonged states of reduced consciousness (so-called “vegetative states” and “minimally conscious states”), whose rehabilitation needs are limited facing very relevant nursing needs.

OUR PATHWAYS

In the logic of rehabilitative medicine what matters, besides the skills involved, is the patient’s accompanying in a pathway extending from the Hospital to the territory.

Over the last two decades the hospital rehabilitation phase has been significantly shortened therefore identifying rehabilitation surgeries in multiple phases and sectors is needed, creating continuity between what is done in the Hospital and what can be done at home or with different procedures (e.g. outpatient treatments).

In order to continue the rehabilitation pathway after hospitalization, the patient may access the Out-of-Hospital Rehabilitation Unit at the Don Calabria’s Multi-purpose Center (Via San Marco, 121 Verona) under outpatient system or in continuous cycle (5 days’ admission with returning home at weekend).

The pathways for main disabilities achieved so far are the following:

Stroke pathway
