ABOUT US

The Neonatal Unit, or Nursery, takes care of newborn infants with attention and expertise. The Unit si managed by qualified obstetricians, members of Obstetrics staff, by ensuring a continuous and personalized care from first moments of life. At the Pediatrics Department there is a H24 pediatrician and is active the Neonatal Pathology that deals with the infants needing specialized care.

ACTIVITY

The obstetricians of Nursery accompany and support parents in care and nutrition of infant, from birth to examinations after discharge. They help and support for the change of nappy and umbilical cord management. Furthermore they carry out various neonatal screening and collaborate with pediatrician in routine examinations, to which the parents may attend. These examinations take place within the Nursery, whereas the other assistance acitivities are mainly carried out in the room, where a changing table is available.
During the stay in the ward, the parents can attend to group information meetings held by pediatric and obstetric personnel, dedicated to fundamental subjects as safety of infant at home and outside, protection of his/her health and management of main problems that may arise in the first moments of life. During the discharge, the Pediatrician fixes an appointment at the “Spazio mamme” (Mums’ Space) clinic where the growth, breastfeeding progress and infant’s general well-being in the first month of life are assessed.

BABY-FRIENDLY HOSPITAL FOR BREASTFEEDING

In December 2018 the Birthing Unit “Sacro Cuore Don Calabria” was recognized by UNICEF as Baby-Friendly Hospital for Breastfeeding. This title was the result of assistance transformation involving all personnel who come into contact with pregnant women, infants and their families. The recognition was issued after positive verifications of documents, visits of facility and interviews by UNICEF appraisers, according to the good practice standards.

BREASTFEEDING DURING PREGNANCY MEETINGS

As “Baby-friendly Hospital” the facility offers (free and open access) an informational meeting on breastfeeding every second Wednesday of the month from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at Hospital’s conference room “Sala Perez”. The meeting, held by the pediatrician and an obstetrician, provides information on care of newborn infant, practices to facilitate initiation of breastfeeding and activities of Birthing Unit. BIRTH ASSISTANCE

From the very first moments of life, the skin-to-skin contact between mother and newborn is supported, fundamental procedure to foster the emotional bond and support the initiation of breastfeeding. Every delivery room is provided with an equipped neonatal area that allows to provide immediately the newborn with all necessary care in a safe and suitable environment. All obstetricians are specifically trained for assistance to newborn infants, even for situations requiring additional interventions or attention, in order to ensure a complete, qualified and timely assistance. Furthermore the Hospital implements the “rooming-in” that allows the mother to keep her newborn with herself 24H, ensuring the continuity of care.

AMBULATORIO “SPAZIO MAMMA”

L’ambulatorio “Spazio Mamma” è gestito da ostetriche che offrono sostegno alle mamme per l’allattamento e il controllo della crescita, dalla dimissione fino al primo mese di vita. L’accesso è gratuito e viene programmato direttamente dal Pediatra alla dimissione; successivamente, se necessario, vengono fissati ulteriori appuntamenti dall’ostetrica presente all’ambulatorio. Il servizio è attivo ogni lunedì, mercoledì e venerdì, dalle 9 alle 14 presso il Centro Formazione. Telefono: 045.6013893.
